I've suffered through several winters that combined a 30 year old Mercedes-Benz diesel with cold Iowa winters and multiple short trips during the day. It takes lots of "battery" to get the car started in cold weather and the alternator didn't always have time to recharge the system on these short trips. As a result, there were a couple of days when I felt lucky to have the car start when going home after work. There were also some days when the car wouldn't start that one last time and I'd have to use a jump-pack.
This winter will be different. I purchased two Battery Tender Plus units, one for my Benz and one for my diesel VW.
Even during warm weather, I have found that the diesels started more quickly if I used the Battery Tender Plus every couple of days. It takes very little effort to "plug in" after pulling the car into the garage. There is no danger of over-charging or damaging the battery.
With the possible exception of using Mobil 1 synthetic oil, I think the Battery Tender Plus is the best investment I've made in keeping my diesels "happy and cooperative" during cold weather.
